Cut Off Wheel vs Grinding Disc: What Is the Difference for Metal Work?

Cut off wheels and grinding discs may look similar to new buyers, but they are made for different jobs. Choosing the wrong abrasive wheel can reduce productivity and create unnecessary safety risk.

Apple Abrasives Middle East supplies cutting discs, cut off wheels and grinding discs from Dubai for metal fabrication, construction, automotive repair, marine maintenance and industrial maintenance buyers across the UAE and GCC.

What is a cut off wheel?

A cut off wheel is designed for cutting through metal and similar materials. Thin cutting discs, such as 4.5 inch 1mm discs, are often selected for fast cutting, cleaner kerfs and reduced material loss on steel and stainless steel.

What is a grinding disc?

A grinding disc is designed for grinding, stock removal, weld cleanup, edge preparation and rust removal. A 7 inch 6mm grinding disc is commonly used for heavier work where material needs to be removed from a surface rather than cut through.

Important safety note

Do not use a cutting disc for side grinding. Always match the wheel to the machine, material, guard, RPM rating and work method. Workshops should inspect wheels before use and follow local site safety procedures.

Buyer checklist

Before requesting a quote, confirm diameter, thickness, bore, material to be cut or ground, machine type, quantity, packing preference and delivery market. This helps the supplier respond with a more accurate recommendation.
